If a picture says 1000 words, what does a video, animated slide show or multi-media say?
In Challenge #5, participants and readers were asked to talk about the beach scene image in 5 words. To date, more than 53 have responded making more than 250 words for that pic. Thank you. If you have not responded please do so at – Images the “Eyes” of the Blog. Then check out the fabulous responses by clicking on this link to the google sheet.
Some blogging platforms will allow you to embed code. Such code can add rich, powerful and interactive media to blogs, giving real ‘nerve’ to the blog. See the beginners Kick Start Your Blog Challenge #6 for more of Sue Waters’ great sharing and advice on this topic.
Youtube, Teachertube and other popular video sites can be embedded in blog posts by seeking out the html embed code. Polls, voicethread, animated slideshows etc can also be added. Size of the media, file type, creative commons and copyright must all be considered.
It is fun to make your own movies using MS Photostory, MS Moviemaker, iMovie etc. Upload them to youtube or teachertube etc, grab the code and embed them back in your post. Audio and podcasts can be uploaded and shared as links within the blog post (rather than embedded).
My students made a text movie on “What makes a good teacher.” One of the girls tagged her post with ‘good teacher’, used the upload media button (the movie size was less than 3mb). See diagram below:-
This added a hyperlink to Rachael’s movie within her post. It opens up in windows movie player (as it was an wmv file).
Several months later she got a comment from a university lecturer in USA saying that she would be using her movie to show the education graduate teachers what a young student thinks makes a good teacher. See Rachael’s post.
Below, is a voicethread (VT) embedded into this post. If you do not have a voicethread account, register for one and seek out the free educators version (access to more than three voicethreads). Add your tip(s) for successful blogging to the VT. Please use your voice where possible. If English is not your first language, please use your native language. If you need help with adding the audio, see the slideshare at the end of this post.
Alternatively, here is the link to the Blogging Tips voicethread.
Your Challenge#6 – Add some “nerves” to your posts/pages.
- Share your favourite media for embedding into your blogs. Give tips/hints/success stories and ways you have used it or
- Find a variety of posts that have media embedded and share these with your readers. Discuss their impact and effectiveness or
- Add a short survey to a blog post eg polldaddy and encourage your readers to share their votes or opinons or add a voicethread or try embedding a new tool to you or
- Your choice of post, with the theme of embedding media.
- Add the url to your blog post as a comment back on this post
- Add the tag #ksyb (Kick Start Your Blog) and other appropriate tags. Adding #ksyb, means that if you key that tag into eg google, all the references with that tag will appear.
- Find at least 5 other blog posts and comment back on their post. Try and find two other blogs that you have not checked out before.
Extension activity
- Make an original short movie using MS Photostory, MS Moviemaker, iMovie or your choice of software, (ensure it is a small size), upload it to youtube or teachertube, then embed it back in a post or upload the media into your blog.
- Upload one of your Powerpoint presentations (or create a new one) to slideshare, grab the code and embed in your blog post, or try prezi, create a presentation, grab the code and embed in a post.
- Make sure you check out the wonderful array of tools suggested in the Beginners’ Challenge #6 and try some of them.

Hi –
Even though I am not an advanced blogger I decided to create a post about embedded media: http://teachingiselementary.blogspot.com/2011/01/media-frenzy.html
The post has links that gives examples of student projects with different media types. Those projects were then embedded into our class website. I figured the same idea applies to blogs.
I did find 2 new media types for me – and embedded those into the blog.
Thanks for the challenge.
This challenge sounds fun. I have a giant paper due Friday, so this challenge will need to wait. I just want to send a shout out to everybody that has been leaving comments on my blog (www.berryart.wordpress.com). Thanks a bunch! After my paper, I will be looking at blogs again. I have seen really cool things and read some neat stuff that I never knew before. Thanks everybody!
-Mrs. Berry (aka, grad student buried under several research papers)
Ok, I think I have become a little bit unburied. I have been trying to embed Slideshare and Prezi into my blog. It didn’t work as well as others. I even tried to put it into the html mode and then embed it. The next thing I do is hit publish. The links work. Enjoy. Here is my blog for this challenge: http://berryart.wordpress.com/2011/01/29/323/ .
-Mrs. Berry
Ok, I’m back. Check out my comment below. For some reason, computers don’t like me tonight.
-Mrs. Berry
Christy,
I was just reading Anne Mirtschin’s post which was about embedding slideshare on wordpress blogs. Here is the link.
I have embedded media in my previous posts, but I want to try another site – any suggestions?
Hi Theresa,
You can check out my post for some more ideas of different media to embed in your posts at <a href="”Embedding a Nervous System”. I have embedded a slideshow with a toolbox of different web2.0 tools, many of which can be embedded in blogs and wikis.
Hi Theresa, I am not sure whether Britt has this one on her post, but sketchfu is rather fun. Do you know this one? http://sketchfu.com This tool allows you to sketch and share.
Another is pivot ie creating animations with stick figures. Students love this one. It needs to be saved as an animated gif and then uploaded through the image or media button on your blog. However, I don’t think wordpress allows it, so have forgotten whether that is the platform that you use. (I will have to go back and check). Another simple one is http://www.fodey.com It allows short animated instructions, messages or reflections.
Is the saving a an animated gif part of the Pivot software? My students play around with this and I would love to encourage them to get more creative with it. Last time the Olympics were on I had a small group who had fun animating the various sports symbols.
G’day Mrs S,
yes you save as an animated gif then upload. One of my students has written some instructions – hope they are accurate from Lochie
Thank you for the suggestions! Unfortunately, I was having some trouble so I added a survey through Google Docs Forms. I’ve never tried that before, so I gave it whirl!
Here’s the post: http://techcsrn.edublogs.org/2011/01/27/teacher-blogging-challenge-6/
I have done a simple post for this challenge. It is probably the most important to me though, because it is my point of growth that I want for 2011. It fits right into my goal for myself.
My post shares what I have done with embedding and where I want to go this year. Here is the post.
Embedding Video
Thank you for the inspiration to learn how to embed video. My students have been asking me how to do it, so I have been chomping at the bits for Activity #6. Thank you again.
For this challenge, I created a post about videos about blogging. My students and I created some videos last year for a grant when I couldn’t find what I needed for the blogging promotion project.
This challenge gave me the kick in the butt to compress the videos and post to youtube so I could embed them in this post: http://undefined.edublogs.org/2011/01/26/videos-and-blogging/
Patti
Hi Patti Thank you for sharing your feelings. Why is it that this challenge gave you the ‘kick’ to try and compress the videos? Would you have done it without the Challenge? Does this say something about the power and value of networking? Is it because there is a perceived support base to help if things go awry? Is it because you can start a conversation and get help through the conversation? Is this a trigger to transforming education? I would love to know the answers to these questions, as there is real evidence for a need to change pedagogy and immerse technology in the classroom.
Murcha,
This challenge gave me the kick to learn how to embed video because it was a direct “how to” that showed me how simple it actually is to embed video. It also gave me the kick to prepare my own videos to embed in my post. This kick was more in the networking area with the opportunity to show these videos to other educators interested in blogging.
Patti
I didn’t know it, but I got a head start with my post yesterday for No Name Calling Week. It has a picture (from FlickerCC) and a poll (using Google Docs) asking how readers would respond to the situation pictured. If you want to add your six word response go to What would you do?
Now I’m off to post about other media I use and learn exactly what is voice thread.
Stop right here!!!
I have created a very brief survey on blogging and student safety in response to this Challenge. It would be great to have an input from all my fellow ‘Challengers’!
You can find the survey at the ‘Classroom Blog Board’
Do it now!
This was a fun time to share some of my favorite sites and tools. I do, though, want to thank this challenge for helping me play more with html. I made some images smaller, figured out what I needed to do to embed some html into the posts, learned what I wasn’t able to embed (Java, apparently), and so on. I am not a natural for this stuff, but I am enjoying gaining confidence with experimenting. I no longer feel as if I will break the Internet if I make a mistake. See my results at Book Frontiers—Movin’ and Groovin’.
Lydia, you have made an honest but quite profound comment. How many teachers do you think feel like that – that they might ‘break the internet’ if they do something wrong? How do we help teachers overcome those feelings?
I’m not sure how we help teachers overcome those feelings. I used to have a colleague who not only couldn’t post her class letter on our service, but she often failed to succeed to send her letter in an email to me so that I could post it. (She would walk to my office to see if I got her email…) Finally I realized that she just couldn’t deal with the fact that she had been shown two different ways to send an email, and that they both would work. (menu, icon, etc.) It simply confused her into helplessness.
So while my first instinct is to say we have to encourage people to try, I know now that some people just can’t work through it. I worked with that teacher for almost 8 years, and she never managed to make things work. She just gave up. And eventually, she retired.
I have seen the opposite problem too–a young middle-school teacher who friended her students on Facebook, even though she had very inappropriate photos on her page. (She left after a year to be a full time mom.) She just didn’t think it was a problem.
I believe, though, that most younger teachers (I’m 53, so that’s almost everybody!) are willing to try and are generally responsible. They have had this around most of their lives, and they are less frightened by the thought of making a mistake. So I hope that this becomes less of a problem as time passes.
I have to reply to your “I’m 53″ comment. I am the same age (54 in March) and I find it mildly distressing that most of my teachers are younger than my son! Younger than me is one thing, but younger than him??? LOL
Regarding “breaking the Internet”, I tell my kids and teachers that unless they physically break the hardware, most anything else can be fixed.
Of course, I am also a big proponent of “save early, save often” and daily backups!
I have created my class blog a few months ago and it seems to be running fine so far. I have used Photo peach for uploading pictures on a page. You can use voki’s and students love creating their avatars. But is it possible to upload a voki or pic on to the comments that students leave. I would love trying to embed a movie pictured in class. However, am busy with the inspections going on in school. will keep you posted on that. Thanks for this activity Sue.
I discovered that I’ve got some nerve
I already use some media in my blog, but there is so much more I can do.
Thank you thank you thank you. I have been putting links to videos but I never knew how some blogs have the videos put right into them rather than clicking on a link. This challenge has been so useful and I find I am enjoying this outlet to share my ideas.
Thank you,
Melissa
My blog: http://notanotherhistoryteacher.edublogs.org/
Here is my post for today. http://lauriefowler.blogspot.com/2011/01/nerve-wracking.html I enjoyed adding video, but I noted some differences in adding media to Blogger. Does anyone know where that other stuff went?
Laurie
I frequently embed youtube videos, either as a context for discussion or to feature a screencast I have made for readers. It happens that today I embedded a collaborative google doc that I am really hoping people will contribute to over the next few months- it is a list of apps that are useful to speech-language pathologists. Embedding a voicethread as shown above is a great idea!
Here is my post:
http://www.speechtechie.com/2011/01/slp-apps-list.html
Played with making a slide show from a powerpoint presentation and also uploaded a photo album of our library: http://wcslibrary.edublogs.org/?s=a+hope+realized+embedding+media+in+this+blog&x=0&y=0
Hi everyone,
I have completed my activity #6
http://groovylibrarian.edublogs.org/2011/01/28/embedding-media-teacher-challenge-6/
I have really been enjoying this challenge.
Enjoy the weekend
Greetings,
Here is a link to my tagged collection of videos relating to interesting discussions and important educational ideas:
http://thebusinessofeducating.com/tagged/Video
Hurray, Don’t you just love it when it works. I just embedded my first poll using Polldaddy. Take a look and complete the survey http://vanessajenkins.edublogs.org/2011/01/27/which-tool-have-you-used/
I’m taking a personal approach here again about my experience in creating a video and embedding it.
My post is called Teacher, be a learner – step out of your comfort zone. I did to create the video embedded here, present it and blog about it.
cheers,
Malyn
I seem to have fallen behind a bit, so this post combines this activity (multimedia) with the last(images):

Kevin
Hi all. My contribution for Challenge #6 can be found here –
I’ll let you in on a secret – I cheat!
Michael,
Your comment says it all. “Less” is truly more. The attention grabbing link is very effective!
I have jumped in a bit late to the Teacher Challenge, but I’m really enjoying it. We recently got an iPod Touch in my Grade 3 Class. I loaned it to a student on our School Web Team to take a video of some kids playing ball hockey. It’s amazing how easy it was to add music (using my iMovie app) and then upload the file to Vimeo! Unfortunately YouTube is blocked in our school district, so I didn’t even bother to try it that way. I encouraged our student bloggers to follow your advice and come up with a catchy title. I think your Teacher Blogging Challenge is going to help us to improve our school blog and get more students and their families coming to visit. Thanks!
P.S. I’m excited to be attempting to add hyperlinks to a comment for the first time.
Ok, I am back among the bloggers. It’s been crazy. I have tried and tried to get this embedded into my blog. I tired the HTML and then posted it right away. It didn’t like that. The links work and I really like prezi. Here is a link to my blog: Called Once upon a time http://berryart.wordpress.com/2011/01/29/323/ .
-Mrs. Berry
I finally had a chance to work on my post. In addition to embedding media, I share a unit I wrote last year. I hope some of you will find it useful! Here is my post.
I have embedded a few book trailers completed last year by the students and also an explanation of the task. There are plenty more on our wiki.
I can’t work on my blog for 2 days because of ‘global teacher’maintenance but I am experimenting with a couple of other things for this task so may add another post if time permits. Let’s go to the Movies
When I read this challenge, I immediately thought of http://www.scribd.com which is a great way to upload your documents and turn them into downloadable & printable materials. I have used this in the past to post our review packets for upcoming tests and am going to continue using it to post homework sheets, graphic organizers for note taking, etc.
With this challenge I decided to use Scribd as a way to announce our school’s upcoming program: “The Rockland Read-In”
Check out the link below for more info
Rockland Read-In/a>
I have embedded a Google Form that I have used previously in my student blog. For some reason, the instructions will not display correctly.
Any help will be appreciated.
What books do we need to buy?
Elaine,
You will need to go into your post again, but make sure you open it in HTML tab or you will have to add the code again for the Google doc. In the HTML for the document you will need to change the number for the width. Fiddle around until it fits in your blog column. Keep checking by right click on preview and open in new tab or window. That way you can keep adjusting until you have the whole document visible.
I embedded a survey as a post using Polldaddy I definitely have to learn more about this technique, because I think kids would like it. But, here it is so far!
Tell us a little bit about you!
My blog AND survey http://cheesyuk.blogspot.com/2011/01/guts-and-grit.html
please take the survey and check out the new embed tool idea we use a lot but it seems is under utilized a lot by teachers – it’s here!
I plucked up my ‘nerve’ on the post that had made me most nervous. See The nerve of that blog
I spent the whole day on my blog and reading others! What fun. I do believe I’m developing an addiction! Hope all those in Australia and New Zealand are getting ready for an awesome new school year. Here is my blog post on embedding media. Denise
I completed my post about how I’ve embedded media in the past. I tried to embed a Prezi, but for whatever reason, it wouldn’t work, so I just left a link.
http://eduquests.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/what-words-cannot-express/
My nerves are complaining that it’s too hot in Victoria today. Well, I got to it and finished the activity…I’m loving this challenge and learning heaps. Thank you!
Here is my post.
Since my blog was down for a couple of days, I explored some fun things to make, such as Blabberize and Fotobabble. I have added another post for Activity 6. You can view the posts at
Let’s go to the Movies
Let’s go to the Movies
Silly me. I pasted the same one twice.
Try again.
Let’s go to the Movies
Fun with a Purpose – Talking Photos
Dear fellow teacher learners,
This is not so difficult in that I was half way there. I had the movies, just had to upload to youtube, and resize in the HTML to about 550 width. I don’t worry about the height as it doesn’t seem to change it.
Come and see the students doing the teaching at:
http://plungingindeep.blogspot.com/
thanks,
Jane
Another fun challenge. I hope some of you can respond to my Google form and add a tip or two for new teacher bloggers who might wonder why they should take the time to blog.

Thanks.
I don’t use YouTube due to school safety issues. TeacherTube is a little unstable for me. I really like Vimeo, but apparently it doesn’t embed. I hope you are able to read about our project, using Google Docs as a backchannel while watching a video. The link to the video is there.
Google docs as back channel.
Low tech is good. Here’s a way to build fluency in the writing classroom with power writing. The slideshare explains the process.

Hi all! I’m a bit behind, but here’s my post!
time to breathe
I hope I will be able to comment. I’ve been having trouble with this lately.
In my post, I decided to look at blogs I continually look to for media:
http://eslbeth.wordpress.com/?p=184&preview=true
I am having so much fun!
Here’s my post with the video
http://kamiresearching.blogspot.com/2011/01/we-are-world-we-are-linguists.html
I couldn’t remember how to post a link into a comment and I hope that I got it right. If not, here is the shortened url:
http://tinyurl.com/49rygmp
Hi Ashley,
The format is (a href=”URL inside quotation marks”)text to show(/a)
replace the ( and ) above with . I did this in the hope that the html tags above will show as text.
text to show is the text you want your users to see and click from. If you don’t put any, the readers won’t see anything and so can’t click on.
I hope this helps.
Ashley,
I think Malyn may have actually used the brackets and they took something out of her comment.
Use the greater than and less than signs<> to replace the brackets () in Malyn’s instructions.
Can movies be added directly into Edublogs Campus, or do they have to be put into youtube or teachertube first? One of our teachers tried to add a movie, but it went in as a link. She was hoping to see the movie itself. Any tips would be appreciated.
Here’s my link for my wall wisher:
http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/msz1011
I think this would be a great tool to use in the classroom. I have the free edublogs, so I could not embed the media!
Msz1011
@Msz1011 Well done with creating your Wallwisher. I love them as they are easy to use and you can embed lots of different types of media.
What really qualifies as media tools? Tools, widgets, gadgets, WHAT? VERY VERY VERY Stressed. Now I really know what some students go through.
No clue how to link voicethread, wordle, voki, or any thing else:(
G’day David,
Notice you have put a wordle in your blog now. I notice when you leave a comment here, your name is connected to an email address instead of your blog URL. If you go to your dashboard> users> profile and change the website to the URL of your blog (no @ in it) then readers will be able to click on your name or avatar and will go straight to your blog.
Hi David
I’ve been a mentor during the Teacher Challenge.
I’d be pleased to help and support you in my Facebook Group.
Please search for this group from your Facebook account (assuming you have one)
Teacher Challenge Mentoring 2011
You are more than welcome…hope to see you there.
I embedded a slideshow I did in one of my classes here: http://wp.me/p1Xfh1-2q
In the new year, I’ll be posting more student-related material on my blog to get them involved too.
